Made getting photos into online web listings much faster, and quality didn't really matter because the early web was quite limited in bandwidth for most people so images had to be small and fairly low quality. Also the highest common screen resolution was 1024x768 and most sites were designed for 640x480 pixels.

And they still show awful quality pictures where you can't make out how terrible the paint is and how much dryrot the door frames have.
