It's good that he gave you some kind of feedback on the salary part, but most of the companies will simply reject your application in situations like these, with a generic reason: "we decided to go with a different candidate". Anyway, the sad reality is that salaries are currently location based, no matter how you put it. At least until the world becomes a single economy, if it ever happens.
