Wait. Who is going to explain to normal people what HTTP is?

  I was at a party a few weeks ago explaining Usenet to a crowd of confused faces. When I said, 'its sort of like reddit.. but not reddit', that seemed to satisfy them. Just tonight I had to explain what a .exe file extension is for to another friend. Its easy for those of us who are technically minded to 'just get it' when we use a new system, tool, etc -- and its also incredibly easy to forget how little the general public truly understands (or even cares) about the technology they operate on a daily basis. The day I meet a woman who cares about scraping websites to create RSS feeds is the day I consider marriage again.

My wife is also the first woman I met who knew what IRC is, even though she's non-technical (apparently they covered it on her journalist studies). One of the many little things that impressed me about her :).
