This will give you some structured activity to do for the first few weeks and will aquaint you with others who are probably encountering the same situation. In addition, its a good way to get an instant social circle so you can at least have people to hang out with in a new country. As a side-effect, you will also get a much deeper understanding of the local people/culture if you have at least a basic understanding of their language.
