I prefer things old-style. The time and place: as soon as you show up, you check the bulletin board to see the list of names with grades. I gather that this is now frowned upon, but real publicly observable competition is a huge incentive to do well. It also relieves a bit of anxiety for those who would otherwise unjustly think they are doing badly. If you want to impress fellow classmates, perhaps especially those you find attractive, getting to be the best on that list does wonders.
