the comms earpiece are very similar to the bluetooth ear sets that used to be cool to some people. does the sci predict the tech or does the tech imitate the sci fi.?

The computer would calculate things slowly with the sound of a punch card machine, beeps and flashing lights[0] and its voice synthesis was ROBOTIC, because that's what the future sounded like in the 1960s. I think both. Obviously there's a bit of reasonable extrapolation on the part of the writers, but lots of engineers and scientists inspired by the series have also tried to make that future happen.
