I think it’s largely constant reinforcement that kids aren’t especially great. 90% of people are in the bottom 90%. A lot of our culture is pushing people to think that it’s either best or worst. A lot of of young adult stuff commiserates in this, celebrating the tacit knowledge that you’ll eventually fail. So many memes are about feeling how you secretly suck. Or how they can do one relevant task well but fail at basic fundamentals. I also think this is mostly a mindset issue caused by worrying parents constantly demonstrating why you need to be better.
