There used to be more shop and home economics style classes to teach practical skills. Not everyone has parents with similar knowledge to pass on even about very practical things, and making that sort of education available could help a great deal. Many come from families so dysfunctional, in fact, that school might be their only opportunity to escape learning many adverse habits. What also could help would be more open ended research projects that aren't rigidly structured but instead teach the student how to pick up new skills for themselves. I continue to find it astonishing that in a time where you can learn how to fix most simple things on Youtube that many younger people still flounder when faced with a novel task.
