The simplest way to format a Word document is to select the text and format it. Unfortunately the simplest way is also the worst. If you constrain yourself to using Styles instead you get all the benefits of templates and consistent styling. There should be a mode in word processors that disallows on-the-fly formatting and forces consistent use of styles.
