Anyone who has been through a bad divorce, as a spouse, child or friend of a spouse will know what it means. It’s the difference between trying to find a way to change a relationship in a way that allows for it to continue, and something acrimonious. A lot of divorces are pretty ugly, often involving infidelity, loss of interest or financial troubles. Sometimes though, people just find that they’ve (to use a popular metaphor) grown apart. Two and a half decades brings a lot of life experience and change to a person, and it can be that a couple finds they’re no longer romantically compatible even if they still love each other.
I take this statement then to mean, at face value, that this is a mutual decision being made after attempts to salvage the relationship have indicated a need for change. Of course people also lie to put the best spin on things, but in this context I can only speak to the statement itself, not its veracity.
