Very unlikely that any animal will swim hundreds or thousands of miles to a free food joint, there’s easier ways to eat. And there’s biologists on record saying that this imprinting does happen with handlers and they try to avoid it in research situations.
- andai 8y agoDo you recall any specific methods for preventing imprinting?
- logfromblammo 8y agoHandlers wear sock puppets resembling the target species, and interact via the puppet while the human face pretends to be ignoring the action. If the animals imprint on the puppet, it stops existing when the handler takes it off, and the nearest alternatives are live animals of their own species.
- LitFan 8y agoIs that confusing or damaging to the animal? Do they perceive the "stops existing" as dying? Should the handler remove the sock puppet out of view of the animal?
- sudhirj 8y agoNot a biologist, but I've always found my dog interesting if I step on him by mistake. He barks and snaps at my shoes, trying to attack them. Stops if I take them off, and it doesn't alter his relationship with me in any way. It's like the shoe on me is a distinct animal from the shoe off me, and neither of them is related to me in any way.

- princekolt 8y agoI had never seen this video before, but as soon as I saw the presenter was Terry Jones I was 100% sure it was a joke. Edit: He seems to be particularly interested in making penguin jokes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k1ccguXiws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k1ccguXiws
- agumonkey 8y agoAnimals, unless deprived, are very capable of feeding themselves .. my old grandma's cat still brings whatever she finds at night.
