Animalus Anthropomorphicus, "the animal as seen through the human eyes."
I think Dindim has found a source of free food. Although it's a win win because who doesn't want to be visited by a penguin.
- sudhirj 8y agoVery unlikely that any animal will swim hundreds or thousands of miles to a free food joint, there’s easier ways to eat. And there’s biologists on record saying that this imprinting does happen with handlers and they try to avoid it in research situations.
- andai 8y agoDo you recall any specific methods for preventing imprinting?
- logfromblammo 8y agoHandlers wear sock puppets resembling the target species, and interact via the puppet while the human face pretends to be ignoring the action. If the animals imprint on the puppet, it stops existing when the handler takes it off, and the nearest alternatives are live animals of their own species.
- LitFan 8y agoIs that confusing or damaging to the animal? Do they perceive the "stops existing" as dying? Should the handler remove the sock puppet out of view of the animal?
- sudhirj 8y agoNot a biologist, but I've always found my dog interesting if I step on him by mistake. He barks and snaps at my shoes, trying to attack them. Stops if I take them off, and it doesn't alter his relationship with me in any way. It's like the shoe on me is a distinct animal from the shoe off me, and neither of them is related to me in any way.

- princekolt 8y agoI had never seen this video before, but as soon as I saw the presenter was Terry Jones I was 100% sure it was a joke. Edit: He seems to be particularly interested in making penguin jokes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k1ccguXiws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k1ccguXiws
- agumonkey 8y agoAnimals, unless deprived, are very capable of feeding themselves .. my old grandma's cat still brings whatever she finds at night.
- anigbrowl 8y agoI find the people quickest to go on about anthropomorphism tend to have the least experience with animals. When you think about it.'s quite the intellectual conceit to assume you fully understand the decision-making of another creature and that it is entirely dependent on food. Reminds me of certain economic ideologues who insist everyone, whether they know it or not, is motivated by money and self-advancement.
- justtopost 8y agoSo, taking a dig at capitolism and rational thinking in one swipe? This is a website devoted to exploiting technology for capitolism. Yc is literally an investor. But go on and tell us how not advancing ourselves benefits the world at large, Ill wait.
- beaconstudios 8y agoAnti capitalist sentiment is actually pretty common here, both this site and the tech industry are well populated with liberals and leftists alike.
- gaius 8y agoliberals and leftists alike Of the limousine variety, mind.
- beaconstudios 8y agoWell, yeah, most of them are.
- a3n 8y agoWait ... I can't be a liberal and a capitalist? I have to be a full on caricature of a capitalist? Can I take a liberal position, say LGBT equality, and be a capitalist?

- aaron695 8y agoHN loves fake news firefoxd, not much point trying, especially with all the signs it's fake - From a foreign language, lots of chance of mistranslation. Country with average/below standard news quality. Way to cute and internetable. From the biologist who was quoted in the story, who is also only one biologist and has not got peer reviewed work done with this story - because Dindim was rescued, fed and stayed with Mr. Joao for the entire part of the year where the species usually stay in the beach and breed, along the coast of Patagonia, it imprinted Ilha Grande as it’s land based home instead. When all the Magellanic penguins are going to Patagonia, Dindim goes to Ilha Grande and recognises Mr. Joao. Penguins are usually very loyal to their partner. They may live for over 25 years and usually mate with the same individual in the same nest every year. This site and partner fidelity certainly facilitated the development of the relationship between Dindim and Mr. Joao. The relationship was created by the accident suffered by Dindim and by Joao having rescued him. etc - https://www.facebook.com/joaopaulo.krajewski/posts/1008600529225514 https://www.facebook.com/joaopaulo.krajewski/posts/100860052...
