Lets not forget that a lot of people like myself, can not be bothered with even thinking about design. The main reason i write stuff in either plain text or LaTex is, that i do not want to spend even a second on figuring out the height oft a heading. Especially if you are 2 pages in and have to remember random numbers for text size in listings or whatever. Every document looks like crap when i try to do it manually and on top it wastes my time fidgeting with widths and heights. I leave the design to people who now what they are doing (not me) and have the computer do the tedious formatting stuff. Also you can put those Tex docs in source control. And if you don't like how the document looks, choose a different theme and recompile.
