Some months after unsubscribing from friend's posts email alerts, I changed my password to something I did not want to remember, only to be automatically re-subscribed, without notice, to their post updates.
- giancarlostoro 8y agoThere's a setting I saw on Instagram about this where it will send you emails if you're inactive for too long. It's an entirely distinct setting from all other email spam. There was one setting on Instagram I would toggle, and come back two seconds later to find it retoggled, it was to suggest my account to other people to follow, I've managed to acquire like 20 follow requests from total strangers, I can't make it stop. Something is seriously wrong with IG. I'm a programmer, this is the sorta thing if I heard from someone else I wouldn't believe, but it's fundamentally broken imho.
- helloguillecl 8y agoThis is probably what it was. But I can tell you, I never saw such an option in the "unsubscribing" form.
- giancarlostoro 8y agoIn the case of IG: https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/6emails.png https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/6emails... It's under "Reminder Emails" which most people don't disable usually cause they don't think about disabling it.
- 2sk21 8y agoI'm testing this hypothesis. I have not logged into Facebook for three months and am still getting daily emails with links to posts
- Consultant32452 8y agoWhat worked for me was to update my Facebook login email from my real email to my spam mailbox. Now, I don't care how much they spam me.
- LeftTurnSignal 8y agoIf it helps, I haven't logged into FB since Jan 2018. I still get e-mails from FB about posts my friends made weeks or months ago. Never anything within the past few days though. Just now I got one for a post my friend made on Nov 28th. Not very enticing to me, lol. I can't remember how to login to my FB account (and just don't care to try), so I just set up a spam filter to catch them and delete them. Within the first two months after I stopped logging in, I would receive 20+ e-mails a day from "friends I missed" or whatever. Now it's "only" about 3-5 a week according to spam.
- Khanhanhan 8y agoI tried to teach Gmail to mark emails from FB as spam but without luck. It seems though that deleting the FB account did help.
- paulie_a 8y agoFacebook has a ton of dark patterns. There is always one unread message in there shitty messenger client. Except there are zero conversations because I deleted them. And the messenger app is an incredible piece of junk, whoever did the ux with the chat heads should find a new line of work.
- eyeundersand 8y agoHmm. What do you dislike about the Messenger app?
- paulie_a 8y agoAlways having one unread message and the stupid chat head interface.
- kurtisc 8y agoChat heads are the first thing I disable on every new phone. I mostly get frustrated by features breaking and then staying broken for months. I don't know how things like not being able to expand an image or play a video you've sent are slipping past testers.
- Semaphor 8y ago> whoever did the ux with the chat heads should find a new line of work. Fascinating. I always wish other apps had the chat head feature as it's pretty much the only reason I still use the messenger app instead of Trillian.
- jessaustin 8y agoThese emails really have to be dealt with in your spam filter.
- vnw 8y agoUnsubscribing from these emails (Facebook, Twitter, idk, doesn't matter) is a chore, they make you go through lots of hoops and then they ignore the request and keep spamming you anyway. Also, by unsubscribing you're revealing to them that you are opening and reading those emails, which is something you probably don't want to disclose. The best solution is to simply configure a filter in your email client so those emails go to the trash directly.
- danieldk 8y agoOr nuke your account. I deleted my Facebook account halfway last year. Haven't received a single e-mail since.
- laumars 8y agoYou can't delete accounts. Only deactivate them. But if you ever log in again it all comes back up as it was before you deactivated it, This was a huge problem for my wife because her deactivated account got hacked and then myself and all of her friends and family started getting spam.
- vengefulduck 8y agoYou can delete it you just have to jump through some hoops: https://www.facebook.com/help/224562897555674/ https://www.facebook.com/help/224562897555674/
- laumars 8y agoIs that a new thing? I didn’t see that option when we looked and I seem to recall it was a common complaint at that time too. I wonder if that’s come about because of GDPR? Anyhow, it’s handy to know it is there so thank you.
