I'm not a designer, but wasn't Jony Ive largely responsible for leading many of the great designs at Apple, including the iPhone? Or do you think he's stagnated, or perhaps is unfit in his current managerial role, or something else?
- interlocutor 8y ago> wasn't Jony Ive largely responsible for leading many of the great designs at Apple, including the iPhone Steve Jobs was the tastemaker. Without Steve's input Jony is apparently not able to produce insanely great designs.
- ryanwaggoner 8y agoAirPods prove this wrong.
- danieldk 8y agoI have two pairs of AirPods. Technically they are a marvel, but their design is quite ugly (large white bars).
- ryanwaggoner 8y agoI disagree, but I’m not sure where else we can go with this, since it’s a matter of taste :)
- mwilcox 8y agoHe was promoted to handle all design including software. He was best focusing intensely on industrial design for hero products, under Jobs

- NeedMoreTea 8y agoNot so much. Most of his iconic designs are actually pretty direct copies of the looks Dieter Rams of Braun created a decade or three earlier. That includes a fair selection of the original iPhone apps and icons. Surprising perhaps considering the brouhaha over rounded corners. That doesn't make them bad, but Ive seems to take mostly the look not the design philosophy. Meanwhile he pursues the cult of thinness.
- HNLogInShit 8y agoJony Ive is a played-out rip-off artist. He did one good thing: make a rectangular MP3 player when Creative and other morons were inexplicably disguising theirs as Discmen. Ive is the Trump of product design: With no productive ideas of his own, he only seeks to destroy the achievements of generations of predecessors. Witness Apple's war on usefulness, including the elimination of headphone jacks, the shitification of keyboards in both physical quality and with the embarrassing emoji bar on "pro" computers... the idiotic MacBook that had only ONE PORT, the asinine diminution of battery volume with the excuse of "thinness" (which no one asked for)... Glass phones, the deletion of Home buttons... The buying public has deemed the iPhone design a failure. How do we know? Because the vast majority bury their "thin, elegant" iPhone in a bulky, tacky case. And they carry a wad of wire and power brick around, and beg bartenders to plug their shitty phones in; or they crawl under tables in public places to do so themselves. PATHETIC.
- Mindwipe 8y ago> Or do you think he's stagnated, or perhaps is unfit in his current managerial role, or something else? Partially unsuited to his current role and surrounded by yes-men who play to his worse instincts, and partially in that he used to have several powerful counterweights that are no longer present on Apple's exec team to challenge him.
