Yes this is true. When I first started out as the founder of my business I tried everything I could to avoid firing underperforming people, but I eventually learnt that all this does is make the problem worse. It never gets easy to fire people, but when you know that it makes it better for everyone (including the person fired) you learn to get on with it when needed - it is one of those unfun jobs that you just have to do.
