Not a big fan of it either, though it's important to recognize that given the era it was released (early 1950s), it was quite ahead of its time. Perhaps ahead by at least 2 decades in anticipating American youth's punk culture, that we see from the mid-70s onward.
As a side note, you might give his later Franny and Zooey (1961) a try, finding a more nuanced Salinger at work.
