I find that billing hourly can make for a more pleasant relationship with the customer. Provided that you give good justifications for the hours you bill. On fixed price contracts there is lots of haggling over the exact scope, requirements, changes and meaning of words in the contract. Hourly billing lets me smile and say "sure thing" to more requests, something that I actually prefer doing.
