Notably absent from this list is Ambrosia (https://www.ambrosiasw.com/ https://www.ambrosiasw.com/) and Panic (https://panic.com/ https://panic.com/).
BBEdit was my first "real" text editor, maybe along about 93 or 94. When it came out, it was far, far ahead of any other similar tools on either platform. It introduced a lot of future programmers to regular expressions -- whether that was a blessing or a curse might be debatable.
- porphyrogene 8y agoI tried to make a purchase from Ambrosia last night and it appears that their payment and fulfillment systems are inoperative. I had heard that was the case but I was being optimistic. They may have gone defunct without warning at some point in 2018.
- username223 8y agoSadly, it looks like https://www.ambrosiasw.com/ https://www.ambrosiasw.com/ is now defunct. "They tried to kill it with a forklift..."
- naravara 8y agoWell, guess I’m never recovering my license key for “Escape Velocity: Nova” then Captain Hector take the wheel!
- mminer 8y agoIt’ll be a shame to lose gems like Escape Velocity. I know several people (myself included) have asked about acquiring the rights to the games but received no reply. It appears Ambrosia is indeed defunct.

- LiNeXT 8y agoAmbrosia has been effectively dead since 2013 when they laid off their entire staff.
- ben_w 8y agoGiven how badly my effort to make Mac shareware went back in 2010, inspired in part by their catalog (and Marathon and a few others), I’m not surprised. I wasn’t expecting a grand success, but I only made around £2000 total, including the later iOS App Store stuff. That reminds me, I need to delete those meta tags from my website…
- paradoxparalax 8y ago"I only made around £2000 total" I really, really need a "failure" like that, this trimester. Or this semester. I would accept the failure without any problem : )
- ben_w 8y agoIf I made that in a semester it would have been fine. That was about 1.5-2 years.
- jfoster 8y agoOut of interest, which app/game were you trying to purchase?
- thaumaturgy 8y agoThat's terrible news. At one time they produced some of the most polished software around.
