My disillusion and cynicism know few bounds in any matter involving the EU (or any political body, for that matter).
Over the years, something like this could easily morph into 'this open source software certified and legal to use within the EU'.
- vertex-four 8y agoThe EU has been funding the development of open source software through grants for many years now.
- interfixus 8y agoYes, I know. And?
- Jonnax 8y agoWhat you said hasn't happened.
- interfixus 8y agoSilly me. What hasn't happened, never will happen. Sorry. No governing body will ever threaten software freedom.
- vertex-four 8y agoNo, but you’ve got to have an argument for why this particular round of funding is somehow different from the others which haven’t led to what you suggest so far - what is it? Or is there some general argument for why the EU funding open source software will lead to our demise? Does this round mark a specific point in the journey to free software being made illegal? “Governments funding open source software is bad because reasons” isn’t really a useful post on Hacker News.
- conanthe 8y agoThe EU funds nothing, it is the tax-payer.
- interfixus 8y agoCareful! Any EU criticism, scepticism, or disdain, however soft and tentatively phrased, will unleash an army of downvoters in these hallowed halls.
- Jonnax 8y agoTax payers fund all governing bodies. What's the criticism?
- johnisgood 8y agoI think one could ask such questions: "have you tried not funding what you don't even know about?" or "have you tried not paying your taxes?"
- dullgiulio 8y agoLike not funding scientific research and going to prison for tax evasion. Both have been tried, believe me.
- johnisgood 8y agoHaha, if only. :)
