I also hated high school with passion. I loved it at the university though. That is also where I found the little circle of my closest friends - after 20 years we are still close. I am not sure there is any lesson to be learned for the original poster except maybe... do not over-think it. Things change quickly at that age and a year from now your life might be pleasantly different without doing anything special to achieve that (not that I am advising against mixing it up a little if you feel like it).
