I've taken to opening every nytimes article in an incognito window, it seems to help. Probably too late for you now though. Somehow they seem to feel that there's nothing in between a casual observer and someone who gets a vital portion of their news from them. I wouldn't mind slipping them a few bucks, and I've done so for the Guardian, but their full subscription rate is just too steep for what I would gain from it.
