Ask HN: Transient/non-degree student application advice?

Has anyone on HN gotten into a tough school as a non-traditional student? If so, do you have any advice on increasing my chances of acceptance? I took a year away from college and I have now decided to apply to Georgia Tech as a non-degree student first and apply next fall to be a degree seeking student. Please and thanks.
