This is a pretty good breakdown but to the author: i would like to see a better explanation of defaults. Node will ship with the defaults needed to perform tasks logically and unambiguously. This however doesn't mean that a user's use case is locked away. ESM in node has hooks which allow people to override resolution behaviour, which means you could put esm in `.esm` files, or cjs in `.sadness` files, or have all files in a specific directory be esm, or read package.json and pull metadata out of it, etc.
