The intent is to use the extra resolution for detail not to fit more on the screen. Unfortunately most software is still designed for back when we didn't have enough real-estate and so Linux is not very good at DPI scaling. Windows used to be just as bad but has gotten better slowly over time. Mac has always handled this perfectly from the get-go.
