This is unrelated, but I've never had the opportunity to ask before: in what cultures is it common to put a space before a colon (e.g. "Librefox : Browse With Freedom")? When I see that behavior, I immediately know the author isn't a native English speaker, but I've never known the reason behind it.

- FragenAntworten 8y agoI believe it’s French. https://www.iwillteachyoualanguage.com/learn/french/french-tips/french-punctuation https://www.iwillteachyoualanguage.com/learn/french/french-t...
- Nodraak 8y agoAs a French, I confirm we put a space before colons. (It's a mistake I often see in English presentations made by French and it drives me crazy)
- abrowne 8y agoSince we're on the subject, saying "a French" sounds wrong to me (American native English speaker), even though the same construction is OK for other nationalities. (E.g. "a German" is OK.) You're better off with "a Frenchman"/"a Frenchwoman" or "a French person".
- chrisdhoover 8y agoNo no no. As French is the correct English locution
- infogulch 8y agoInteresting. That's always irked me but I passed it off as a typo or some personal preference. I wonder what other typographical differences are due to culture that I passed off as something else.
- IronBacon 8y agoI love the total unrelated pieces of trivia you can find on the comments. I know about the "Oxford comma" (I think that's how is called), as they taught me to never put a comma and a conjunction in a list of things and the two spaces after a sentence... Yup, above it's a case of missing "Oxford comma"... ^__^;
- thaumasiotes 8y agoChinese fonts use a full width colon, which has the same effect: 山义:丫乙
- abrowne 8y agoIt's correct in French typography. Same with exclamation and question marks and quotation marks. It really should be a narrower, non-breaking space.
- intika 8y agoThank you all for your feedback it's appreciated, i just updated the README to fix that :) and indeed it's because of french language. ^^
