A picker is expected to pick an item every 9-10 seconds for 10 hours?
- new_guy 8y agoPretty much, one of the things about working at a place like that is you have ZERO value as a human, your prior experience, educational level, none of that matters. You're expected to be a literal human robot, a mindless cog in a machine and the picking rates reflect that. It's basically a living nightmare.

- adrianmonk 8y agoThis seems pretty believable. A lot of picking systems have a light that tells you which position to grab something off of. (This is called "pick to light".) So you're just reaching and grabbing something off a shelf and throwing it on a conveyor. It's a pretty simple operation that won't take all that long. If your algorithm is any good, you should be about to group them together so that a picker can grab several nearby things one right after another. (It wouldn't be good for efficiency or the worker to make them move around more than necessary.) It is manual labor, so it's going to be physically demanding. I'm sure they probably push people as hard as they feel they can get away with, but this rate seems like something most able bodied people could achieve. But I'm sure they're very tired and sore after their shift is over.
