There was live footage of what looked like a thousand people marching with torches the night before, chanting “you will not replace us”, which is part of the racist “white genocide” theory. I live in North Carolina with a lot of folks who have confederate flag clothes or complain about how bad it is that confederate statues come down. I don’t know that any of them expressed sympathy for the Charlottesville groups. Your general point about movements being messy things is right. I’m just not so sure it applies here.
