Last time an article about Flutter was posted, several users showed concerns that this is a campaign to promote the product.
I'm starting to lean into this theory more and more.
Articles like these bring nothing to the table and look out of place for HN.
Putting on my tinfoil hat, I'm concerned about the ratio of likes and comments as well.
- xpaulbettsx 8y agoPeople excited about X submit articles about X, is this surprising? > Articles like these bring nothing to the table and look out of place for HN. This is a reasonable technical article on how one framework implements rendering and manages to achieve a pretty high bar for performance, not at all out-of-scope for HN.
- untog 8y agoIt's a new cross platform UI framework with excellent performance. I'm not surprised people (myself included!) are interested to learn about how it does what it does.
- jonas21 8y ago> Putting on my tinfoil hat, I'm concerned about the ratio of likes and comments as well. Maybe I'm missing something, but what's unusual about the ratio of likes to comments for this article? At the time I'm writing this, the article has 88 points and 20 comments, a ratio of 4.4. Was it significantly different when you wrote your comment? Among the top 10 articles on HN right now, the average ratio of points to comments is 4.2 and varies from 1.2 to 6.7.
- bgdam 8y agoLast time I did a 'Show HN' post, I got 40 points and only 4 comments. The comment to points ratio is not a good indicator of shilling. It could just mean that most of those who vote don't have anything to contribute to the discussion. Besides, even if the article is a campaign, so what? It still contains information that I (as someone who has never used Flutter) found interesting, and I'm sure many others did too, and that's why it's gotten the points.
- singhrac 8y agoI think you might be overly worried - it sparked a lot of discussion about cross platform app design, React Native, Electron, etc., that was probably interesting. I think you may have picked up on a site-wide (profession-wide?) tendency to be interested in new toys.
- rkangel 8y agoI could perfectly believe that this is part of a campaign to promote flutter. I don't think that's a bad thing. Building community for open source projects (which is what it is - not a product) is important for success. As someone who has bought in and has hopes for a platform where I can share can share UI and logic across Web, mobile and desktop, I'm glad it's being promoted.
