Correlation != Causation
These types of studies are excellent for drawing a hypothesis not a conclusion like "obesetiy makes you dumber"
My theory -- people eat more and excercise less due to some sort of stress. Stress that prevents engagement in activities that promote cognitive capacity or possibly even cause neural damage. But again,only guesses.
The less we have publications containing only correlative conclusions,the better(imho)
- SamReidHughes 8y agoMaybe... but my mental sharpness increased as soon as I started exercising and watching my diet. I was stress free before and after 45 lbs of weight loss. Maybe it has more to do with eating meat, fewer carbs, or the exercise, rather than weight. My impression of mental sharpness is in terms of programming, and also how many typos I make, and how much energy I have to shape sentences when posting comments. I wouldn guess the main reason is that I'm sleeping better, breathing properly at night. Edit: I'd say sleep is definitely one bit of causation behind the correlation right there, but I don't know how big it is.
