A Startup's Guide to Application Scaling
- ecaroth 16y agoOn thing this article didn't touch on was using a platform as a service (like heroku, app engine, azure, etc...) that will scale automatically (in theory). I'ts blowing my mind how many of these becoming available. It used to be that being an engineer at a smaller shop meant programming, architecture, upgrades, etc were all things you had to know. I forsee a breed of programmers in the upcoming years who are able to create and entire multi-tenant application without ever having to work in a bash (or similar) prompt. The thought both saddens and excites me at the same time.... Can you imagine how much more honed your design/development skills might be if you never, at any point in your career had to worry about architecture? I fear that many great practices and design patterns that promote easy scalability and modularity will soon be forgotten with all these 'auto-scaling' platforms coming into play...
