Mathematics in the 20th Century (2002) [pdf]
- ianai 8y agoI really did love linear algebra in college. Shame I’ve not made it more a part of my career. I imagine this totally missed the data science stuff.
- banachtarski 8y agoThis isn't really relevant at all to the linked paper.
- Rainymood 8y agoWasn't this the guy that claimed to have some new proof on the Riemann hypothesis? What eventually happened? I'm not sufficiently into the mathematics field to stay engaged with this news but I'm curious to see what was the deal in the end. I remember lots of people being generally upset. - joppy 8y agoWhat eventually happened is that the proof was wrong, and the community tried not to make a big deal about it, since Atiyah is now very old, and has made many significant contributions to mathematics in the past.
- nabla9 8y agoYes, but this text was written in 2002 when he was still lucid.
- gww 8y agoThis sounds oddly similar to the movie Proof from 2005.
- nikofeyn 8y agojust to be clear, "this guy" isn't just some random person. atiyah is one of the best mathematicians of the 20th century.
- soVeryTired 8y agoIt's a real shame that that's what most people know him for now. The guy was one of the best geometers of his generation - I don't think anyone should blame him for going a little soft at age ninety.
