This is something I think you should always have for a small business or startup. You can make them generic at the beginning if you prefer, but no matter what once you start talking to potential clients, vendors or attending shows etc you need a business card. I personally hate having them, but they are a necessary part of doing business professionally. My personal opinion is you should never use startup events as a measure on how to conduct business. They are great events to attend to network etc, but I wouldn't use them as a gauge to what is normal business practice.
