Can we at least try a free market approach already?
- undersuit 8y agoHow was ACA not a free market approach? https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/billsum.php?id=hr3590-111 https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/billsum.php?id=hr3590-111
- kup0 8y agoThe US healthcare system is not even remotely approaching any semblance of a "free market", not that I support a free market approach anyway. At most we have a dwindling insurance market that helps some, makes it worse for others, doesn't have enough choice in many areas, etc. (but has benefits like covering pre-existing conditions, etc) So even to argue that the health insurance market is a "free market" would be pretty weak

- benj111 8y agoAre you being serious? And if you are could you expand? How would someone born with Cystic fibrosis survive in your scenario?
- bdcravens 8y agoAs someone with CF, I love that preexisting conditions can no longer be denied insurance. At the same time, I want to make sure that companies like Vertex have sufficient profit motivation. I definitely don't feel like a purer free market would support that, but I don't have 100% confidence in Medicare without significant reforms either.
- benj111 8y agoI'm not American, so I don't have any experience of Medicare etc. I don't particularly share your concern about sufficient profit motives. I think the free market breaks down when both parties know that for one party, it is literally a matter of life and death.
