I've been practising martial arts for quite some time. First I started with Capoeira (looks good, doesn't work in a fight) then I switched to Wing Tsun (looks like crap, very effective in a fight).
I've been practising WT for about 6 years. I basically changed from "the guy who punches like a girl and can't take a hit" to "the crazy guy who just took down someone twice his size". Our organization (Avci WT System) is also being practiced by German Special Police commandos, so I can say it is based on practical applications & dirty fighting rather than "just dojo" action.
If you really want to get competent in a real life fighting situation you should definitely go for a heavy contact martial art such as muay thai, krav maga, wing tsun etc.
Also carrying a kubotan as a keychain helps a lot.
