Ask HN: Home security without compromising privacy?
Some people in my household want to get a Ring doorbell camera (2 'yay' votes). Others are against the idea (2 'nay' votes, one of them vehemently so).
It's a Christmas present type idea right now and we had a largely emotional discussion that didn't really get anywhere concrete on details or requirements.
On the one hand, I believe proactive defense preparedness is pretty much always superior than not planning ahead. On the other hand, I share some of the concerns of the nay votes:
- intra-surveillance concerns
- "it's not necessary" (which, to be honest, doesn't seem a fact to me: hindsight is 20/20, foresight is not.)
- concerns that they are ineffective (been browsing some reddit posts about these home security doorbell type things and not all of them really inspire confidence in the products themselves..)
- discontinuation concerns
So far I consider myself in favor of some type of video-based security but not if it means compromising non-negligible degrees of privacy. Then again, it's the people who actually own the house who are in favor of it.
I'm trying to figure out if there is some compromise that works out best for everyone.
So.. how do you secure your home, and with what technology, and what should I think about? (Questions I'm thinking I should be thinking about are "what is your threat model?", etc)
