I find this discussion tiring, also I have actually seen people vividly defending both positions: that the most efficient code is also very elegant and the opposite, as here. It depends so much on the situation, skill/experience of the person/team building the stuff and what focus one has. Sometimes an elegant solution opens completely new perspectives on performance optimizations.
