That's my view of it as well. I distinctly remember both states of mind: not understanding and intimately understanding. I'm not sure there's a way to bridge the gap, the ignorance and incredulous attitude I had was unassailable. I remember it with shame but I hold onto the memory so I never forget what it's like to not understand someone else's life or perspective.
