This article is a great reminder of how to work with others but I think it is unlikely to be received well here. Hacker News loves to dump on junior developers and hates literary subtlety. This article uses the latter to admonish the former.
- blowski 8y agoYour description of Hacker News makes it sound like it's a single person with a uniformly consistent opinion. It isn't.
- steve_taylor 8y agoIt’s a mob, reinforced by a system of rewards (upvotes), punishments (downvotes) and the politics of “karma”.
- busterarm 8y agoSome of us don't care so much about the karma. Reactions to my posts are either extremely polarized (one way or the other) or basically neutral. I've even gotten the occasional ban threat from dang when I say something particular unpopular. Occasionally there's still some worthwhile discussion that happens here.
- WilliamEdward 8y agoHis description makes it sound like a hivemind, which it is.
- mykowebhn 8y agoAlthough I tend to agree with you, I do think one has to keep in mind their audience. I typically don't expect to have to read programming blogs several times in order to catch the literary subtleties, whereas I might expect that reading literature or philosophy.
- zengid 8y agoMaybe "hates" isn't the right term regarding literary subtlety. Perhaps, "cannot comprehend" would be better: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18689608 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18689608

- AlexCoventry 8y agoWhat are some examples of HN dumping on junior developers?
