This reminds me of the time in the mid-90s when the USPS wanted to charge the price of a stamp for "email". I believe this was because the word mail was used in electronic mail.

- jonathanoliver 8y agoI was referring to an effort during the years around 1993-1995. I was in a 3rd world country doing humanitarian work from 1999-2000 where I had no internet access so the email chain referenced by Snopes is new to me. If I recall, the idea really was floated around/tested but, of course, never implemented because there was so much backlash.
- eli 8y agoPretty sure that was an urban legend.

There has never been a bill proposed that would require a surcharge or "stamp" for e-mail. The UN did suggest that a "bit tax" of 1 cent per 100 e-mails could raise over $70 billion/year, but it was never a real plan.
- Sohcahtoa82 8y agoCould you imagine how much less spam there would be though if spammers had to pay for every individual e-mail? I mean, yeah I still get junk mail that advertisers pay for, but we're talking 0-3 items per day. E-mail can easily reach 50+ messages per day.
