I'm currently halfway through Volume 1 of the Gulag Archipelago. I find most criticism of it-- the ones that say it is too literary-- clearly have not actually read it, because many of his assertions reference specific names, events and documents that can be verified. In any case, I very much recommend it to anyone flirting with socialism or communism, because it is a very sobering account of things that can go wrong, most of which most of us cannot begin to imagine.
