I really like the upspin approach for federated self-hosting of userdata (for lack of a better term) in that it builds a platform for it that apps like nextcloud and others would build on top of. I'm not saying its the right solution, but I think trying to get the layers right to make self-hosting a wider and more reliable reality is only going to happen by building the right opensource platforms/components first.
