I am amazed by the number of places which I (USA citizen) can travel to without a visa.

  It's something many of us don't really think about, but it ends up being quite convenient. For example, citizens of most countries cannot book a multi-leg trip (not single booking) without a visa, simply because that would require going through passport control to board the next leg.
