I would think the general climate of fear in the country would make it frightening to launch an ambitious product like this. There's really no hope of a second right now when things go wrong. Disclosure, I work for Google, but have no connection to Waymo. I hope the team can keep pushing on; Waymo is one of the most important "moonshots" to the country. It really could save lives. But, one mistake and people won't trust it even though hundreds of automobile accidents happen every day.
