I shamelessly copy. I have a lot of respect for the UX and design people I work with, and I know those skills take hard work to develop even for people with talent. I know I'm never going to finish a side project if I force myself to acquire those skills myself before I do anything, so I copy existing designs that look good to me. If a side project turns out good enough that I think it could be a real product, I expect I will try to find a partner.
