Maybe despite his skills he didn't perform well in that particular interview? Hiring is very difficult. Your have limited amount of time with the candidate and based on some coding task and a few hours of interview you need to predict whether that particular candidate is going to perform well in the role you're filling. It's hard, and I'm sure I passed on a few good candidates just because at that point of time I wasn't sure enough whether they'd be a good addition to the team or not.
