What's considered a safe distance? How far away can they pick up the signal?
- victor9000 8y agoJust put them in a Faraday cage, problem solved.
- friday99 8y agoThey make Faraday bags (many options) for this purpose. That is where you should store your fob.
- toyg 8y agoMeasure how far away your car unlocks, then keep the keys as far from external walls as that. But to be honest it’s easier to keep them in a metal box that shuts properly. That’s what i do (although my fob still needs interaction, so i should be a bit safer, in theory). Also consider that keyless cars actually still have a way to enter, be it physical or remote: garage-supplied universal keys and software. VWs for example have an old-school keyhole under a thin plastic bit on the door, so that garages can access it when you lose the fob.
- searchhay 8y agoThieves are boosting the fob's signal. So it's not practical for car owners to measure a safe distance.
- gmiller123456 8y agoThe criminals will be using more sensitive equipment than what the car is, so "Just far enough way that the car doesn't pick it up" is bad advice.
- gmiller123456 8y agoThere really is no safe distance. A better antenna will be able to pick up the signal no matter how weak.
- stupidbird 8y agoI'm sure if you stick a fob up your ass it'll dampen the signal a bit too. Or you know, maybe put a button on the fob.
