I'd say the HN response is, no, you can't be good and work at FB.
- notacoward 8y agoPretty sure you're right, but I figure at least a few people might be able to realize that "you should be ashamed" just doesn't lead in any productive direction. What if I was ashamed? Would leaving be the only positive reaction to that? As great as I think I am, I don't think Facebook would miss me. They'd just replace me. I'd just carry the taint to my next company, while my replacement also becomes tainted. Good job. Big thumbs up. In that hypothetical, is it not even possible that somebody could do more good by staying?
- gbear605 8y agoLeaving is by definition going to hurt them - if it wouldn’t, they would have already replaced you. It’ll either cost them (interviews, higher pay for someone else), leave them with a marginally worse developer, or both.
- zorpner 8y agoYou've gone through some serious mental gymnastics to justify your lack of action, but it's clear that you know that Facebook is making you worse than you're making Facebook better. Rest assured that there are companies where you can work on interesting problems without facilitating genocide.
- drewblaisdell 8y agoWhether or not that is true, my experience on here is that the amount of effort and self-doubt involved in this response by the average HNer is so low that I suspect jealousy and schaddenfreude are often involved. For example, consider how the root comment above ends.
