Ask HN: Feasibility of unfair e-voting machines?

Does anyone have any information or inside knowledge on the openness / audit-trail of e-voting machines? I try to balance my intense government paranoia with rational analysis of my situation, so I am wondering what kind of defense the public has against these machines fudging a few percent one way or another?
