Does pair programming only work with friends?

  Nah. You can do it with anybody. I've been part of long-lived teams that pair. But there we rotated pairing partners once or twice a day, so that over the course of the week you'd pair with everybody. I think that's much more sustainable for most. Pairing with the same person every day is sort of like sharing a snowbound cabin with them. There are very few people I get along with so well that they wouldn't grate after a few weeks.
